American Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ACCJ)

The Chubu Chapter is a group that welcomes members from various industries and activities, regardless of their nationality. Most of the members in Nagoya are not Americans. I am involved in this group as the Chair of the Independent Business Committee, and my Vice-Chair is a Canadian who is a great person. You don’t have to be involved in a “traditional” business activity to join. Many members are running English schools or teaching but are interested in finding a job in Japan or starting their own business here.

The group hosts various events, from educational to social, and has some of the best traditions in the foreign community. These include the Walkathon, Champagne Ball, Meximas, and “Boozing on a Building,” or the annual beer garden event. If you’re interested in joining this group, the easiest way is to attend an event. Membership can be expensive, but it’s worth it if you’re motivated and willing to seek value. However, you don’t generally have to be a member to attend events in Nagoya.

Small World

Living abroad can be a life-changing experience, providing individuals with the opportunity to understand different cultures better, learn new languages, and view life from a different perspective. However, being an expat can also be a lonely experience. Being thousands of miles away from home and family, navigating language barriers and cultural differences in a world where there are few people like you, it can be challenging to connect with others deeply and meaningfully and make long-lasting friendships. Small World aims to create a community of expats and local Japanese people with similar interests and goals. Small World organizes events celebrating a wide range of hobbies, cultures, and backgrounds, creating safe and engaging environments to build a network of friends in your new home away from home.
