TOYOYAMA, Aichi Prefecture–The first F-35A fighter jet assembled in Japan was shown to the public here on June 5, part of plans to upgrade the nation’s fleet with the “ultimate stealth aircraft.”The stealth fighter, assembled and unveiled at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd.’s Komaki South Plant, is one of 42 that Japan has ordered from the United States.The first four jets were assembled in the United States and have been already delivered to Japan. Mitsubishi Heavy is under contract to conduct the final assemblies and inspections of the other 38 aircraft.The estimated cost of one F-35A is about 14 billion yen ($127 million).Pilots of the Self-Defense Forces have been training with the F-35A in the United States. The aircraft will be deployed to the Air SDF from fiscal 2017.The F-35A, 16 meters long with a wingspan of 11 meters, is designed for low observability.The body has almost no concavity and convexity, compared with the F-15 and F-2 currently used by the SDF.
